An image of Eugene the Egg posted by Instagram account @World_Record_Egg has surpassed a post by Kylie Jenner as the most liked photo on the platform.
Posted on January 5, Eugene has garnered a whopping 43 million likes at the time of writing.
In the caption accompanying the image of Eugene, the team behind the World_Record_Egg account wrote: “Let’s set a world record together and get the most liked post on Instagram. Beating the current world record held by Kylie Jenner (18 million)! We got this ?”
This beat Jenner’s most liked post by more than 25 million.
Jenner’s post was an image of her baby Stormi, posted February 7, 2018, which had 18 million likes.
Jenner has now posted a response to the usurpation.
Eugene’s popularity grew thanks to some celebrity shoutouts.
The people behind the account made sure to tag some of the world’s biggest viral websites, including LADbible and Buzzfeed, as well as The Ellen Show and late-night TV host Jimmy Fallon.
The egg became even more shrouded in mystery when Buzzfeed released a report claiming the person behind the account is not a human at all, but a chicken named Henriette, who resides in the British countryside.
Hot on the heels of Eugene’s success, actor Terry Crews is attempting to beat both Jenner and Eugene with an image of his bald head.
The post has a while to go before it eclipses Eugene, though we’re only two days in.
