How To Be Safe On A Plane On The Beach: Air NZ’s Latest Safety Video

With safety videos so damn good people actually search YouTube to watch them, you know Air New Zealand has really found its place in the air safety video arena.

And today you get to have a five minute break to pretend you’re doing work and watch the airline’s latest one, which is all about surfing, and being safe on a plane, obviously.

Air New Zealand has brought together some of the greatest wave riders such as our legendary Mick Fanning, Brazil’s Gabriel Medina and Americans Laird Hamilton, Alana Blanchard and Anastasia Ashley.

Shot over three surfy locations, Malibu in the States, Raglan and Piha in New Zealand and our very own Gold Coast, the video features all the usual instructions you’d expect, just from the comfort of a white sandy beach and deck chair.

Air New Zealand’s head of global brand development Jodi Williams said the safety video will help put the surfing destinations on the map for travellers.

“Previous safety videos have done a fantastic job in selling seats and driving tourism flows whether it be to New Zealand off the back of the two Hobbit inspired videos and Bear Grylls experiencing one of New Zealand’s Great Walks or the collaboration with Sports Illustrated that boosted tourism to the Cook Islands,” she said.

Aussie surfing superhero Fanning said Air New Zealand’s past creative genius videos, and the ability to share the breaks in his homeland, attracted him to work on the safety video.

“A few of my mates will probably wind me up for working with a Kiwi airline but through the Air New Zealand safety video I got the opportunity to share some of my favourite local surf spots with everyone,” he said.  “On its day the Gold Coast has some of the best surfing anywhere in the world. It’s been fantastic to be show off this iconic location.”

And just for fun for this chilly Thursday morning, here are some of Air New Zealand’s other safety videos.

October last year saw the airline create what it deemed ‘the most epic safety video ever made’, inspired by The Hobbit.

And near the beginning of 2014 Air New Zealand released a safety video in celebration of Sports Illustrated’s 50th anniversary. However some publications suggested the video was “highly sexualised” and “objectifying women”.

Tough as tits explorer Bear Grylls has also been featured in one of the airline’s safety video.
