Facebook Threatens To Unpublish The Chaser Over Wiggle Meme

The Chaser found themselves in hot water with Facebook, after the social media platform threatened to unpublish its page over a Wiggles meme.

The Chaser is known for commenting on whatever is happening in Australian pop culture. So, naturally, when right-wing Senator Matt Canavan shared his feelings about the new diverse Wiggles lineup.

Canavan told The Australian, “You go woke, you go broke.”

The Chaser responded by creating up one of its signature memes about the incident, accompanied by a satirical article.

However, Facebook banned the post and according to The Sydney Morning Herald, threatened to unpublish The Chasers Facebook page.

Facebook also blocked advertising from the page and restricted The Chasers earning ability.

Seemingly the post was removed under Facebook’s Dangerous Individuals and Organisations policy, basically, the bots that remove this kind of content, don’t have a sense of humour!

Thankfully, The Chasers Facebook page has now been restored.

Even Canavan is seemingly happy with the result, though it is worth noting that Canavan is working on a bill to prevent social media platforms from being able to deplatform people.

SMH reported he said: “I don’t have an issue with the joke that the Chaser made.

“It’s edgy but they’re an edgy comedy group. I laughed when I saw it.

“While this case has got a bit of publicity because of the profile of the Chaser there are other cases that we don’t hear about from ordinary Australians and they have very little recourse.”
