The Twenty20 cricket concept is supposed to have it’s fair share of fun – dancers, fireworks and players mic’d up to chat directly with the commentators.

However, it all turned wrong for Channel Nine last night after it was chatting with Australian captain Steve Smith while he was batting and he subsequently got out the following ball. Furious fans then venting their rage on social media.

Despite the light-hearted nature of Twenty20 cricket last night’s game against India was a particularly fiery affair with allegations the two teams had been fiercely sledging each other.

Australia were in a good position to chase down India’s score until Smith got out and Australia subsequently lost the game by 37 runs.

Smith was chatting with the commentators via an earpiece before he miscued a drive and sent an easy catch to mid-off. Fans believed he’d been distracted by the banter and it was disrespectful to the captain of the Australian side.

Earlier Smith had ignored questions from the commentary box suggesting he was clearly uncomfortable with the process particularly at such a crucial time in the game.
