Air New Zealand’s Famed Safety Videos In More Strife For Failing To Mention The Safety Bit

Air New Zealand has gained a great reputation for its fantastically elaborate in-flight safety videos, however, its latest one has been criticised by the country’s aviation watchdog for not taking the safety message seriously enough.

It’s latest video, titled Surfing Safari, comes with a surfing theme and features nine international surfers including Australia’s own Mick Fanning and Anastasia Ashley, who has modelled in Sports Illustrated.

However, New Zealand’s Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) had criticised the airline for including “extraneous material” in the video – basically, it’s a surf video not a safety one. It’s not the first time that Air New Zealand has caught the ire of the aviation watchdog.

A spokesperson for the the CAA said: “As we have commented previously, the video diverges materially from the ‘safety message’ at times, and whilst I appreciate the need to engage the viewers, the extraneous material detracts from the scope and direction of the safety message.”

That said, the CAA admitted that the video did comply to its production standards.

Many of the airline’s inflight videos have become YouTube cult classics and included one recently (above) Titled Safety in Hollywood featuring the Flight Of The Conchords’ Rhys Darby.

While another video from 2014 (above) caused a stir after featuring models in bikinis.
