Brodie Kostecki and Todd Hazelwood claimed the 2024 Bathurst 1000 championship over the weekend, raking in a Total TV National Reach of 3.4 million and a Total TV National Average Audience of 1.2 million for Seven.
Kostecki and Hazelwood drove their Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 Gen3 to their first win at the Bathurst 1000, making them the 65th and 66th winners of the great race.
With just one safety car, this year’s edition of the Bathurst 1000 was the fastest in history—taking less than six hours to complete.
Fans complained that the race was too “green,” claiming that the lack of a crash or anything dramatic through 100 laps was unusual for the race.
“I love car racing and I love the mountain but this Bathurst 1000 is shaping up to be the most boring ever. Usually SOMETHING starts to happen around lap 100. Let’s hope,” said Daniel Jack Paproth on X.
It appeared that the 1000km distance was set to run under green flags for the duration until Matt Payne lost control of his Grove Racing Ford Mustang at The Cutting, resulting in the sole safety car intervention and a 27-lap sprint to the flag.
This put the Triple Eight Camaro of Broc Feeney and Jamie Whincup on the tail of the leaders, with the two lead cars quickly gapping the field.
With neither Kostecki nor Feeney putting a wheel wrong, it was the Erebus car that took the flag by 1.3496s.
“I can’t believe it, this guy here [Hazelwood] did a stellar job all weekend,” said Kostecki.
V8 Supercars star Declan Fraser spoke about the horror of finding out his Gold Coast home was destroyed by a fire just hours before racing in the Bathurst 1000.
The 24-year-old Brad Jones Racing driver was told on Saturday while preparing for the big race at Mount Panorama that the luxury Hope Island house had burned down.
“It’s been a wild 24 hours, I found out yesterday in the middle of the day and that was pretty gut-wrenching,” said Fraser.
“My main concern was the people I live with there, who own the house, I was just renting it off of them. They were in the house at the time that it happened.
“They got out all safe, which I am very, very grateful for,” he added.
The Block is still proving wildly popularity since debuting its new season recently. The Sunday episode brought in a Total TV National Reach of 2,414,000 for Nine Network.
Gogglebox, over on 10, brought in a Total TV National Reach of 1,015,000.
