People across the world have flocked to social media to pay tribute to Queen Elizabeth II following the news of her passing overnight.

Celebrities, politicians, sportspeople and more have paid their respects to the late monarch on social media, with many hailing her 70-year reign as one of the most influential in modern history.

Queen Elizabeth II has died. Buckingham Palace has confirmed the peaceful passing of the longest-reigning monarch in British history. She is survived by a large extended family, including her first-born son, Prince Charles, now King Charles III. pic.twitter.com/jcy0JWMEjL

Regardless of political leanings, it has to be said that Elizabeth was hugely influential in her time as Queen, with people across both sides of the political spectrum discussing the many accomplishments she made across her reign.

I’m not a royalist. But I have empathy. The Queen is loved by and a great comfort to millions. In such a fractious, uncertain era, I wouldn’t deny anyone the need for whatever emotional constants soothe them or deny their real worry or grief.

Kindness is always the right choice.

I don’t care if you are a republican or despise the Royal Family.

To make vulgar comments about the Queen’s ill-health is totally inappropriate.

Not to be outdone, the comedians of Twitter have entered the fray with a number of memes regarding the Queen’s passing, including a number of references to Princess Diana.

In perhaps the most outrageous of responses, the Irish side of Twitter appears to have gone into a meltdown over the news, with a huge amount of tweets celebrating the Queen’s passing with jokes, memes and more. It’s already gotten to the point that Brits are begging the Irish to behave themselves!
