Radio Host Resigns After Making Shocking Joke About Dreamworld Tragedy

Tasmanian radio host Anna Dare, who just last week made an inappropriate joke at the expense of the Dreamworld victims, has resigned from her on-air gig.

Dare had made an awkward gaffe during a Secret Sounds segment, where listeners had to guess what a sound was in order to win $140.

“I really don’t like it,” Dare said after hearing the sound. “It’s violent sounding. It’s not getting stuck in a conveyor belt at a theme park is it? Too soon?”

Dare’s co-host Mick Newell sounded shocked by the comment, and threw to a song, as Dare protested, “That’s what it sounds like to me when I first heard it – that’s the first thing I thought of”.

The 7HOFM presenter was taken off air and suspended by parent company Grant Broadcasters, and now has departed the network.

“She thanked the station for its support and the opportunity to return on air, but has decided to take a break from radio,” Grant Broadcasters CEO Grant Cameron told news.com.au.

Now a search is on to replace Dare with a new host who will join Newell, who has been co-host of the breakfast show on 7HOFM for over three years after a stint as a My Kitchen Rules contestant.

Newell was only joined by Anna Dare in January this year.

Cameron had at the time of the comment said Dare suffered a “serious lapse in judgement” and “sincerely apologise[d] to our listeners, the broader community and everyone affected by this week’s terrible tragedy”.

Dare had in the past referred to her gig on the show a “dream job” , as told to The Mercury, moving from the Gold Coast to Hobart for the job.

Newell also said the hosts never prepared anything prior to going on-air, adding, “We don’t script anything, we just try to come in with fresh heads and a few stories up our sleeves and jump in — and it works”.

Well, not quite. The website has removed all mentions of the radio show and Dare.
