OpenAI has updated its privacy policy and will enable advertisers to target free users of ChatGPT.
Late last week, the company informed users that it would begin targeting free users with ads and services by switching on cookies as default.
“We’ll now use cookies to promote OpenAI products and services on other websites,” OpenAI said in an email.
“This is separate from and does not impact your conversations or the ads you may see in ChatGPT. Your conversations with ChatGPT are private and are not shared with advertisers.”
OpenAI will begin tracking US users with ads on its Free and Go plans.
Users with Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu accounts will not have ads, and OpenAI said that it will not show ads in accounts where users say they are under 18 or the software believes they are a minor.
Chats with the bot aren’t shared with third parties.
OpenAI began showing ads for Australian users last month. Ads are also running for users in the US, New Zealand and Canada.
In December, OpenAI opened its first Australian office in Sydney.
