Director Justin McMillan has teamed up with post production house Heckler to tell the story of The Surfer’s Code for the Surfrider Foundation Australia.

Former three-time world champion Mick Fanning narrates the 90 second film which uses footage of epic waves shot by cinematographers from around Australia.

The Surfer’s Code manifesto was created by legendary South African surfer Shaun Tomson and is 12 rules that encourages surfers to respect the sport, the ocean and each other.

The film will be shared across the Surfrider Foundation’s platforms and surfing influencers.

An avid surfer, McMillan who has directed TVCs for brands including KIA, Audi, Nikon, Tiger and Fiji Tourism, said the film was a passion project. “I’ve been involved working in and around the ocean for many years and I wanted to do something to give back and help the Surfrider Foundation increase awareness and funds for the great work it does.

“We had great collaboration from cinematographers around the country who happily came on board. We all have so many amazing shots in our archives that never see the light of day, some of which we’ve risked our necks for, so it made sense to utilise them for such a great cause. It was great to get Mick’s support as well and Heckler came on board and worked their magic, with the end result a compelling and visually stunning film.”

Will Alexander, executive producer at Heckler added: “The Surfrider Foundation does excellent work in helping ensure our oceans and beaches are looked after and we’re delighted to be able to support Justin in creating a work that will resonate with surfers across the country”

The Surfrider Foundation is a not for profit organisation dedicated to the protection of Australia’s waves and beaches through conservation, activism, research and education.

Scott McClelland, board member at Surfrider Foundation Australia said: “The powerful words of Shaun Tomson’s Surfers Code, written back in the 80s for Surfrider to encourage local surfers to respect the sport, each other and the ocean still ring true. Justin is one of the world’s best surf directors, and he pulled together an incredible cast and crew to help bring these words to life. We wanted a film to help people reconnect with the ocean and Justin brought that to us with goosebumps.”
