HBO Max unveiled The Dragon’s Lair treating some Sydneysiders (including B&T) to a surprise appearance from House of the Dragon’s Steve Touissant (who plays the character Lord Corlys Velaryon). HBO Max partnered with Special to bring the activation to life (see photo gallery above).

Across Friday and Saturday, the historic Wynyard tunnels became a realm of smoke, shadow and ancient power as fans journeyed below the city ahead of today’s season 3 return of the HBO Original series House of the Dragon.

Fans embarked on a fully realised step-through journey that began with the imposing presence of the skull of Balerion. Dragonseeds entered the Tunnels of the Red Keep, navigating smoke-filled passages inhabited by rat catchers as deepening shadows closed in around them.

Beyond the tunnels lay the Dragon’s Lair Gate, where fans would go on to stand eye-to-eye with an ancient beast, terrifyingly and undeniably present, before the journey culminated in a dramatic ascent to the Iron Throne, the ultimate symbol of fire, blood and destiny.

HBO Max senior director of marketing in Australia and New Zealand Sasha Mackie said: “The Dragon’s Lair was created as a truly fan first experience — a chance for people to step inside the world they love and feel the power, danger and thrill of Westeros come alive around them.

“Seeing fans embrace the challenge with such passion was incredible and the perfect way to welcome the new season of House of the Dragon.”

Toussaint, visiting Sydney ahead of House of the Dragon’s season three premiere on HBO Max today, surprised onlookers on Friday morning when he arrived at the tunnels, taking a walk through The Dragon’s Lair himself.

In addition to The Dragon’s Lair, HBO Max is further celebrating the return of House of the Dragon by offering a special promotional offer for new and returning HBOMax subscribers, with discounts of 31 per cent on Standard and Premium monthly plans for six months for those who sign up before 16 July.

For fans who want to bring Westeros into their own homes, HBO Max is also partnering with HelloFresh to create eight limited edition recipes inspired by House of the Dragon, such as Dracarys Herb and Fire Roasted Lamb Rump with Root Veg, Blackened Spinach and Red Wine Jus and Rhaenyra’s Poached Pears with Ember-Spiced Nuts and Syrup Drizzle.

The Misfits Media managing partner Rosie Oakshott was given a special tour of the Dragon’s Lair on Friday.
