In a truly unique event, Kate and Mark Headon tied the knot on the Sydney Cricket Ground prior to the Sydney Swans vs Gold Coast Suns match on Saturday night thanks to the club’s Principal Partner QBE.

The once in a lifetime opportunity was followed by a reception for 100 people in a private function room at the SCG with theming, food and beverages all supplied by QBE as part of their prize.

Kate, 35, and Mark, 35, kept with the Sydney Swans theme with guests’ tables named after their favourite Swans players and Swans scarves replacing traditional wedding bonbonnieres.

With more than 200 total entries, the competition was open to all Australian couples who wanted to get married, renew their vows or hold a commitment ceremony. To enter, couples were asked to submit a photo and in 500 words or less say why they deserved to win this amazing Sydney Swans experience.

Winners Kate and Mark had been together for seven years before tying the knot, having attended high school together in Port Macquarie and reconnecting in Sydney years later. Swans fan Mark ensured Canadian Kate followed her red and white traditions to become a Swans member for the first time in 2012.

“It’s an incredible opportunity and it makes our big day just that more special for us, our family and friends,” said Mark.

“We’ve witnessed countless amazing Swans moments together at the SCG, so it seems fitting that I’m marrying the girl I love, on the ground I love, in the city we now call home.”=

Sydney Swans’ co-captain Kieren Jack said the team were excited to learn a couple were getting married on the SCG before they ran out to face the Suns.

“We’re delighted we could celebrate with a win for them and we wish Kate and Mark all the best in their married life together.”

Colin Ahern, head of marketing at QBE Australia, said the team was thrilled to give Swans fans this unique opportunity.

“QBE is extremely pleased to have made Kate and Mark’s special day possible on the hallowed turf of the SCG,” Ahern said.

“As a long-term partner of the Swans, with a relationship spanning 29 years, we’re excited to support a new family embark on their own journey of commitment.

“We wish Kate and Mark all the best for their future together.”
