Vodafone Australia has switched up the traditional device launch with a new experiential platform that positions the first night with a phone as a cultural moment rather than a transactional upgrade.
The telco’s debut work with Howatson+Company, titled First Night Only, is an exclusive live music series designed to encourage customers to immediately put their new devices to use in high-energy, real-world environments.

The concept launched alongside the Samsung Galaxy S26 at Dead Set in Sydney’s Darlinghurst, an underground-style venue transformed into a live performance space for ARIA-winning artist Genesis Owusu. Guests including customers, creators and media were invited to experience a live set featuring Owusu’s newly released track Stampede, while testing the device’s camera and privacy features in situ.

Every element of the event was designed to showcase the handset’s capabilities. Custom lighting was installed to maximise the 200MP camera performance, while branded sweat towels and stickers were provided to encourage social content creation. Even post-gig kebabs were staged as shareable moments, reinforcing the idea that the entire night was content-ready.
A roster of cultural figures and influencers including Ayesha Madon, Tara Chandra, Ethan Lazarov and Angela King were present, helping extend the reach of the experience beyond the venue through social platforms.
Vodafone Australia Group CMO Bec Darley said the initiative was about immersing customers in the kinds of experiences smartphones are designed to capture and share.
“First Night Only is about throwing our customers straight into the kind of moments phones are made for; live music, raw energy and nights you’ll want to remember,” she said.

Gavin Chimes, CCO at Howatson+Company, said the campaign was built around cultural relevance and intimacy, rather than scale for its own sake.
“Vodafone’s First Night Only is about culture and intimacy. The type that only happens in an underground punk bar,” he said. “We wanted to give people real, repeatable moments in places that matter to them. Because those are the experiences that stick, in your memory and your camera roll.”
