TikTok CEO Resigns, Citing “Political Environment”

TikTok’s CEO Kevin Mayer has resigned, less than four months after the starting the role.

Mayer joined the social app from Disney, where he was head of streaming services.

In a message to staff, Mayer said the current political climate surrounding TikTok had forced him out of the role.

“In recent weeks, as the political environment has sharply changed, I have done significant reflection on what the corporate structural changes will require, and what it means for the global role I signed up for,” he said, according to Financial Times.

“Against this backdrop, and as we expect to reach a resolution very soon, it is with a heavy heart that I wanted to let you all know that I have decided to leave the company.

“As we look to the next phase of this company, there is no doubt that the future is incredibly bright. For our users, any potential structural changes should not affect their experience, and I strongly believe that our community will be more creative and diverse than ever.
“The platform will continue to provide our global community an amazing and integrated experience as it does today.”
TikTok has faced intense scrutiny over data sharing and its potential ties to the Chinese government.
Earlier this month, US President Donal Trump issued two executive orders orders to ban TikTok.
It has since been revealed ByteDance – the company behind TikTok – is being pressured into selling its US arm of TikTok.
Microsoft quickly emerged as the frontrunner to snare the app, however, it has since been revealed that both Walmart and Oracle are both interested in making the acquisition.
