News Corp Australia, the Official Representative of the Cannes Lion International Festival of Creativity, yesterday welcomed 36 of Australia’s best young media talent to Day One of the Cannes Young Lion competition.

The group was welcomed by News Corp Australia’s chief marketing officer, Tony Phillips, who said: “Welcome to News Corp Australia and congratulations on your achievements to date.  The selection of all of you comes after the rigorous and difficult assessment of over 250 team entries into the competition.”

The finalist teams attended industry training this morning to assist in the preparation for the 24-hour charity brief.  The training included presentation skills, pitch training and tapping into individual creativity to assist in the response to a brief.

In the afternoon the teams headed to Sydney University for a walking tour, lead by Jake Thomson from Australian Indigenous Mentoring Experience (AIME), News Corp’s Australia charity partner for the 2017 Cannes Young Lions competition. The walking tour was followed by a gratitude mentoring session and another tour of Indigenous inner Sydney.

Karen Madden, general manager of trade marketing and creative services for News Corp Australia said: “What a great experience for our Young Lions teams to get an insight into our charity partner and the fantastic work that AIME does with young Indigenous students.  Their stories were heart-warming and inspirational and everyone that attended found the session rewarding.”

Cannes Young Lion winner and runner up teams in each category will be announced on Thursday evening, May 11, 2017.

The winning teams in the final round will receive return flights to Nice in France, accommodation and Cannes Lions festival registration and will represent Australia in the international Young Lions competition.

Runner-up teams in media, print and cyber categories will represent Australia at the Young Spikes Asia Competition and the young marketers category runner up will attend the Young Marketers Academy at the Spikes Asia Festival in Singapore this September.
