The Herald Sun has joined forces with the Melbourne Press Club and the Western Bulldogs Football Club, to launch the Sam Landsberger Sport Journalism Fellowship to honour the legacy of the award-winning sports journalist who died in 2024 aged 35.
The Fellowship offers western suburbs school leavers or university graduates an opportunity to immerse themselves in sports reporting through a six-month placement: four months with the Herald Sun’s sports team and two months with the Western Bulldogs’ media team.
“Sam was an invaluable member of the Herald Sun team and relished breaking the big stories. He was respected by AFL players and coaches and loved by our readers. This offers young sports fanatics a chance to turn their passion into a career,” said Herald Sun editor Sam Weir.
“I worked with Sam when he was starting out and every day, he just wanted to get better. Providing an opportunity for someone to follow in his footsteps is a great way to honour his memory,” added Melbourne Press Club CEO Nick Richardson.
“The Landsberger family has been a key part of the Bulldogs’ family for decades now, so to be able to honour Sam’s memory and legacy this way is fantastic,” concluded Western Bulldogs CEO Ameet Bains.
Fellowship applications can be accessed on the Melbourne Press Club website.
