Lego Australia has teamed up with McLaren Racing to unveil a stunning life size replica of the Lego Technic McLaren Formula 1 race car, driven by Aussie favourite, Daniel Ricciardo and Lando Norris.
The two McLaren drivers were the first to test it out before it went on display at this year’s 2022 Melbourne Grand Prix at Albert Park.
The replica Formula 1 car was designed in close collaboration between engineering experts from the Lego Group and McLaren Racing and comes decked out with the McLaren team’s 2021 season livery.
You can watch a time-lapse of the car’s construction below:
In fact, the car is a first-of-its-kind official partnership that embodies McLaren’s signature engineering and Lego Technic’s spirit.
The car also gives fans a glimpse of what to expect of the new-look 2022 F1 race cars as the sport heads into an era of refreshed regulations.
The giant build required a whopping 288,315 blocks, and over 1893 hours to construct, and was assembled by Lego’s Ryan ‘The Brickman’ McNaught. Formula 1 fans will notice the incredible attention to detail with the build, such as the V6 cylinder engine with moving pistons, steering activated from the cockpit, suspension and a differential lock.
The lifesize replica will be available for big and small F1 and Lego fans to see over the weekend at the Versor Tech Hub’ (near gate 10), at The Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix, in Albert Park, Melbourne.
So why did they build this thing? Well, it comes at a time when Australia’s Daniel Ricciardo finally returns to race on home soil on behalf of McLaren, after COVID-19 pandemic.
The big build also unites Formula 1, a massive event in the global sporting calendar, McLaren Racing, a premium name in motorsport, and Lego, a brand beloved by adults and kids around the world, bringing them all to the heart of Melbourne.
