Already not the cheapest smartphone on the market, it appears Apple’s iPhone is set to become even more expensive.
With notoriously high prices across its suite of products, Apple has been moving to make its technology more affordable in recent times.
Last year Apple introduced the iPhone SE – a $749 device that is designed to be more accessible than its top-line models.
Additionally, Apple has been able to slightly lower the price of its Macbooks since developing its own M1 Chip (rather than purchasing Intel chips).
However, it seems the newest iPhone might go against this trend.
According to Nikkei Asia, iPhone prices could climb in 2022, after the world’s biggest contract chipmaker ramped up its production fees.
Apple’s main chip supplier, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) is currently said to be increasing its prices, following a global shortage.
It is believed TSMC will be increasing its prices between 10 and 20 per cent.
And while the chip is by no means the only component in an iPhone, there is every chance that these increased costs will be passed on to consumers.
All will be revealed very soon, however, with Apple confirming it is going ahead with its iPhone 13 launch event next week.
Offical invites to the event were released overnight, with the tagline ‘California streaming’.

Some have speculated that the invite itself is a clue that the iPhone 13 will see improved nighttime photography capabilities.
Apple’s SVP of worldwide marketing Greg Joswiak further teased what’s to come, in a slightly more detailed video.

The iPhone 13 rumour mill has been running hot of late.
Just last week there was widespread speculation that Apple might have given us a glimpse of what’s to come, after some keen-eyed pundits spotted what they believed to be a notch-less iPhone in a recent episode of Ted Lasso.
Other rumoured features of the iPhone 13 include an always-on lock screen and new colour options such as bubblegum pink.
