Instagram has beaten out TikTok and Facebook and become the most downloaded app in 2021’s final quarter.

New data published by app intelligence firm Sensor Towers has found that Instagram is still a big contender in an ever-changing market and was the app that scored the most downloads in the final quarter of the year.

According to Channel News, Instagram’s installation rose in 2021’s final quarter by 10 per cent year on year.

Instagram’s win was the first time Meta had a top app since late 2019. Both, TikTok and Facebook were not far behind but did not surpass the app.

Despite the fact that the app is often accused of creating unrealistic beauty standards and it’s partly responsible for the fame of Kylie Jenner. – she’s just hit 300 million followers – it is thriving.

People still can’t resist posting selfies and mindlessly scrolling. Interestingly, while the app has been around for years now it hasn’t plateaued. Instead, it continues to thrive in an increasingly competitive market. However, it’s worth noting that TikTok is banned in India which gives Instagram an advantage.

Interestingly, Tech Crunch has reported that this is only the second time in the last two years where TikTok hasn’t nabbed the most downloads.

Previously Zoom beat out TikTok in 2020, but who can compete with the demand for pointless work meetings?

And while Instagram should be celebrating its win. TikTok still retained the top spot overall in 2021, even without India!

It will be interesting to see which app nabs the top spot next quarter.
