The Australian box office has already busted through the $1bn barrier with a handful of sure-to-be hits set to top off the year’s ticket sales.
It is the fourth consecutive year that the Aussie box office has broken through the $1bn mark but the year-to-date result could be boosted by Boxing Day releases The Hobit and Les Miserables.
The highest grossing movies of 2012 so far are The Avengers on $53.3m followed by The Dark Knight Rises on $43.3m.
Comedy movie Ted sits on $34.5m and has so far outperformed the latest Bond installment Skyfall which has $32.2m and is just ahead of The Hunger Games on $31.1m.
Two children’s movies made it into the top 10 with Ice Age 4: Continental Drift in sixth place on $27.6m and Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted in eight on $24.1m.
The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2 ($26.2m), The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel ($21.3m)and Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows ($20.1m).
A host of big-name movies are also expected to drive ticket sales next year with the release of The Great Gatsby and Iron Man 3 among others.
Val Morgan expects 23 million movie tickets to be sole this summer alone.
