Armstrong confession nets massive pay-TV audience

Friday and Saturday proved big days for TV, with Lance Armstrong’s interview with Oprah Winfrey netting one of the highest-ever non-sport audiences for pay-TV.

According to the OzTam Overnight report 186,000 people tuned into the 90-minute special on Friday, aired on the Discovery Channel, with 100,000 watching the second part on Saturday.

Nine News, Seven News and Today Tonight also made hay from the massive public interest on Friday, getting 1.31m, 1.108m and 1.023m respectively with in-depth coverage of the interview.

The interview is also expected to be one of the biggest-ever live streams, when figures are released by the Oprah Winfrey Network.

However, Saturday’s show was eclipsed by the final of the Big Bash League, which has suffered around a 30% audience loss this season, but finished strongly with 327,000 tuning in to see the Brisbane Heat beat the Perth Scorchers.

Seven also profited from sport with Bernard Tomic’s clash with Roger Federer netting 1.467m viewers on Saturday night, a strong result for traditionally sluggish weekend ratings.
