Serena Williams successfully shut down a reporter’s question about Meghan Markle in a press conference following her win against Russia’s Anastasia Potapova.
The reporter asked Williams her thoughts on Markle and Prince Harry’s decision to step away from the royal family, and whether she had spoken to Markle.
He said: “Your good friend, Meghan Markle, who attended your last 2 slams, and Harry, have taken a move, a stance that many people think is extraordinary and historic.
“What are your feelings about that? Have you spoken to her?”Williams shrugged off the question and said: “Yeah, I have absolutely no comments on anything with that.”
She wryly added: “But, good try. You tried. You did good.”

The line of questioning was particularly conflicting considering it was the very first question of the press conference following William’s opening match.
Williams and Markle met at a charity event a few years ago, with Markle watching Williams at Wimbledon last year as well as flying to New York to watch her in the US Open final.
