The Married At First experiment has officially finished with the four remaining couples overnight reciting their final vows to one another. A total TV national reach of 2,927,000 and a total TV national average audience of 1,804,000 chucked on Nine to watch a shock betrayal, followed by an even more shocking proposal.
Out of the four couples that made it to the final vows, only two made it through. Danny broke Bec’s heart, Alissa and David mutually agreed to call it quits, but more positively Steve asked Rachel to be his girlfriend and for the first time in MAFS history there was a shock proposal (for real).
Against a beautiful back drop of the Sydney Harbour, Philip proposed to Stella by stating, “I’ve never been so certain of anything. I know what my heart wants. Something just for us. Something that is truly ours.”
He then suddenly drops down on one knee and states “will you marry me?”
The camera cuts to a sobbing Stella who instead of saying anything leaps into her partner’s arms to kiss him. Philp then pulls her away to actually check what her answer is. It’s obviously yes, so he puts the ring on her finger.
In true MAFS fashion, the night wasn’t full of beautiful success stories. However, after listening to Bec’s vows to Danny you would have thought that this was the way the episode was heading. But it didn’t take long the things to drastically change for the Adelaide based wife.
Danny’s final vows to Bec begin gently enough – gratitude, memories, a nod to their journey – but quickly becomes a greatest hits of her worst moments. The audience could feel his nervous energy as he continually paused and stumbled over his words.
Finally, he got to the point an delivered the final blow. He explained that when he went home to Melbourne, he didn’t miss Bec. Instead, he felt lighter.
This led him to say to Bec that he is really sorry to do this but he sees her as his friend and not a lover.
MAFS wasn’t the only entertainment program on air last night. Over on Seven, Home and Away out performed Australian Idol. Last night’s Home and Away episode pulled in a reach of 1,524,000 and an average audience of 1,013,000 (both metrics were slightly higher than Australian Idol)
Network 10 rounded out the top 20 most watched programs of the night with Australian Survivor. Australian Survivor: Redemption grand final week begins Sunday, 12 April.
