It was a clash of the codes last night, with Channel Seven’s broadcast of the AFL ranking first, Channel Nine’s coverage of the NRL coming in fourth and 10’s AFC Women’s Asian cup in sixth.
The official season start of the AFL claimed the ratings crown, posing a Total TV National Reach of 2,2251,000 and a Total TV National Average Audience of 780,000.
The Sydney Swans snagged the first win of the season against Melbourne’s Carlton in a nail biting game. In what could be described as an awkward game featured Swans new key forward Charlie Curnow going against his former Carlton teammates for the first time since 2015.
The heart-stopping game had Carlton was in the lead in the third quarter just to be overtaken in the final minutes of the game leaving fans on the edge of their seats.
Meanwhile, over on channel Nine the NRL played its first game of the season played in Australia.
It was a Paramatta v Melbourne showdown with Paramattas new coach Jason Ryles coming face-to-face with his ex-team in yet another awkward sporting reunion for the night.
The storm reigned supreme, extending their remarkable record, of winning every first match round of each season, now for the last 23 years straight.
The NRL boasted a National Reach of 1,766,000 and an Average Audience of 675,000.
In sixth was the AFC Women’s Asian Cup to round off a night of sport. It brought in a National Reach of 1,243,000 and an Average Audience of 466,000.
