The top spot of the most watched program overnight was 9NEWS, grabbing a total TV national reach of 2,287,000 and an average audience of 1,481,000. That is far greater than the population of small country town of Porepunkah who was rocked by a horrific double homicide on Tuesday August 26.
Porepunkah’s population of around 1000 people have been plunged into lockdown after a gunman killed two police officers and left a third injured in a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The news of the rural property search turned double homicide was the biggest story of the evening, pulling a massive reach for 9NEWS.
At about 10.30am yesterday, 10 police officers were attending a rural property in the Victorian town of Porepunkah to execute a search warrant when they were fired upon. Following the incident the suspect fled into nearby bushland, prompting a massive manhunt involving helicopters, police dogs, and hundreds of officers. Authorities warned locals to stay indoors, whilst schools, an airfield, and public services were shut down.
The shooter is still at large and Victorian police have warned citizens that the suspect has several powerful firearms at his disposal.
For the other media organisations Sevens News was just edged for second place by The Block collating a reach of 2,221,000 and an average audience of 1,469,000. And Ten’s Survivor: Australia V The World continued being the most watched entertainment program on its channel, nearly attracting a reach of 900,000.
