A stacked schedule of Day Five of the Australian Open secured more mammoth TV ratings for Nine. Over 2.3 million people tuned in for the night session alone, with 757,000 sticking around to see who would come out on top.
On Day Five, all the stars were out and about. You had Italian superstar Jannik Sinner brush past Australian James Duckworth in straight sets. The second round victory for Sinner notches his streak up to 16 straight wins in the Australian Open.
Fans were also treated to a stunning straight sets win in favour of 38-year-old, Serbian Novak Djokovic. “The Joker” barely broke a sweat dispatching Francesco Maestrelli 6-3, 6,2, 6,2.
Rounding out the night was Australia’s tennis bad boys making their return to the Australian Open in the doubles tournament. Nick Kyrgios and Thanasi Kokkinakis, or more commonly known as “Special Ks”, matched up against fellow Aussies Jason Kubler and Marc Polmans.
The “Special Ks” were unable to recreate their 2022 brilliance that delivered doubles title at Melbourne Park, losing to Kubler and Polmans two sets to one.
After both opting out of playing singles amid ongoing fitness concerns, it was very clear that their busted bodies weren’t up for the task. Kyrgios was halted by his heavily taped up knee and Kokkinakis even had to call a medical time-out for his shoulder.
Over on Seven the newest season of Home and Away continues to attract big numbers. The episode that continued to explore the aftermath of the train crash season finale pulled in a total TV national reach of 1,440,000 and a total TV national average audience of 861,000.
