The Limitless Equation Podcast, hosted by Chloe Hooper, has released a new episode featuring marketing executive and author Tracy Hall, exploring the realities of financial crime, manipulation, and resilience.
In the episode, Hall shares her personal experience of unknowingly entering a relationship with convicted fraudster Hamish McLaren, who posed as a wealthy investment executive and ultimately defrauded her of more than $300,000.
Reflecting on the experience, Hall said the most confronting part wasn’t just the financial loss, but the psychological impact.
“I didn’t lose the money. It was stolen,” she said. “And the narrative needs to change so that the shame sits with the perpetrator, not the victim.”
Throughout the conversation, Hall breaks down the psychology behind scams and coercive control, explaining how manipulation is rarely obvious.
“They’re not red flags… they’re wrapped up in love and care and ‘let me help you’,” she explained.
The episode also explores the concept of “brain glitches” cognitive biases that influence decision-making and how these, combined with deliberate manipulation, create what Hall describes as “the perfect storm”.
Hooper highlighted how the conversation challenges common assumptions about who falls victim to scams.
“You can rationalise everything that happened and feel like you understand it,” she said. “But I don’t know if you ever quite fully believe it.”
Hall also shared practical advice, particularly around financial independence and awareness.
“Outsource the execution… don’t outsource the education,” she said, encouraging individuals to take an active role in understanding their finances.
Now an advocate for financial crime awareness, Hall works with organisations and government bodies to address gaps in victim support and shift public perception around fraud.
The episode offers a personal and educational perspective on one of the fastest-growing forms of crime globally and the human impact behind it.
