Dillon Gibbs and Matt Kuchel from Spark Foundry have begun a treacherous drive from Alice Springs to the Gold Coast in a car worth less than $1,500. Why must you ask? To raise money for the important work of the Cancer Council in the Shitbox Rally.
The Shitbox Rally is the largest community lead fundraiser for Cancer Council in Australia and is now in its 15th year. Teams have to raise a minimum of $5,000, and for Gibbs and Kuchel’s team Spark Plugs, this target was a breeze with their count already at $6,130 and growing.
Gibbs and Kuchel departed from the remote dust bowl that is Alice Springs last Saturday. In their decked out 2003 Holden Commodore (with red rims to go faster), they are tasked with the almighty challenge of covering 3,700km in just seven days. Which, by our less than average maths, means the boys will have to be on the road (sealed or not) between 7-10 hours a day.
Five days in and Spark Plugs are well and truly on their journey, covering over 2000km. Beginning in the Northern Territory, the 2003 Wagon has cruised through South Australia and is now b-lining through NSW to get to the finish line in the Gold Coast.

But this is not just an adventure for Gibbs and Kuchel, cancer has touched both their families, and they are determined to honour their loved ones and those directly affected. The pair are committed to continue raising money on their journey to help fund vital cancer research. It would mean the world to the boys if you could support them on this important mission!
Matthew Turl, CEO of Spark Foundry Australia has thrown his support behind Gibbs and Kuchel telling B&T, “Matt and Dillon were just two of our many generous Sparkies who raised their hand and were interested in taking part in the ‘Shitbox Rally’—all with a cancer story to tell, the motivation to raise funds and a thirst for adventure. The enthusiasm with which they have tackled this journey so far has been truly inspiring, and we look forward to their return to hear more about their amazing experiences, new friends, and newfound mechanical skills.
“The rally is one of multiple initiatives Spark Foundry Australia and Publicis Groupe ANZ have pursued this year to raise funds for our valued partners at Cancer Council, sitting alongside La Course, our running teams, Le Dip, which saw our leaders jump into ice baths, and a record-breaking, if slightly more relaxed, Biggest Morning Tea.”
B&T is rallying behind Spark Plugs and will be keeping a close eye on the team as they cross the finish line blasting Tyler, The Creator and Sabrina Carpenter.
