Today‘s Karl Stefanovic has slammed media personality and republican Peter FitzSimons in a fiery on-air rant.
FitzSimons has long been in favour of Australia cutting ties with the monarchy. Currently, he is the chairman of the Australian Republic Movement. Ironically, his wife Lisa Wilkinson is now overseas covering the Queen’s funeral for The Project.
Stefanovic took a swipe at anti-royalists when he discussed how he didn’t think Australia should be talking about becoming a republic until after the Queen was buried.
He said: ‘There are still people out there doing it. I just think it’s so rude.”
However, he poured salt into an open wound when he made it clear he didn’t think FitzSimons, the face of the Australian Republic Movement, was helping the cause.
He said: “Let me tell you, it is not going to happen while you‘ve got pasty white guys like Peter FitzSimons and Malcolm Turnbull fronting up in Australia.”
Alison Langdon than chimed in and said she’d told FitzSimons she was not prepared to support a Republic under his chairman reign and said, “I did tell Peter if he was at the front of the movement, I would always vote for a monarchy,” she said.
Of course, these words are even spicier when you consider that FitzSimons is famously married to Lisa Wilkinson, who even more famously was Stefanovic’s co-host on Today.
