The industry is mourning the passing of Russell Hopson, the former managing director of M&C Saatchi Australia, and husband of DDB Group NZ chief executive Priya Patel. Hopson passed on Wednesday, aged 55, and leaves behind his wife and four children.
Known for his sharp wit and generous spirit, Hopson was widely respected as a leader and mentor.
He built a distinguished international career in advertising and was recognised for his strategic clarity, creative conviction and principled leadership. Passionate about the power of ideas, Hopson championed work that was both culturally resonant and commercially effective.
He started his career at TBWA London in 1996, before rising to group MD roles at VMLY&R and WPP – where he ran Team Red, Vodafone’s bespoke team. Hopson served as group MD at adam&eveDDB before moving to Sydney with his wife Patel, where he became group managing director at M&C Saatchi Group Australia and New Zealand.
The pair then moved to Auckland in 2021, New Zealand, when Patel left DDB Sydney to become CEO of DDB Group New Zealand.
Hopson was instrumental in delivering major campaigns for brands including News International, Virgin Media, Virgin Atlantic, Bacardi, Commonwealth Bank and Tourism Australia.
Patel described Hopson as “a devoted husband and proud father” who leaves behind “a lasting legacy in the people he inspired, the standards he upheld and the work that continues to reflect his belief in the power of creativity”.
“My gorgeous husband lost his battle with cancer last night, and what a battle it was,” Patel said.
“In May 2023 he was given just three months to live, instead he went on to give us three years filled with chaos, laughter, and love – driven entirely by his determination and sheer will to stay alive.
“Today I’m heartbroken, but I also know how lucky I am. Lucky to have found not only a husband but a best friend, cheerleader, and adviser – all rolled into one remarkable human. He was my one in a million, and it is almost impossible to imagine life without him.
“Thank you to everyone who has been with us on this long/tricky journey. So many friends, family, colleagues, nurses, doctors, and wonderful strangers have given us their time, energy, and support – and it is so very appreciated.
“I’ll always be grateful for every moment we had, every memory we made, and the immense love we shared.”
A private family funeral is being held in memory of Hopson.
Vale Russell Hopson, 28 March 1970 – 18 February 2026.
