Eleven agencies. One trophy. And a large number of people who peaked in year 9 sport. Here, Katie Britton from ATime&Place reports on all the action from Fridays MADC Global International Worldwide Netball Competition – for Melbourne Agencies Only – typing with the one finger she has left that is not currently sore, bruised or broken.
Filling the void between the AFL Grand Final and the Spring Racing Carnival, the MADC Global International Worldwide Netball Competition—for Melbourne agencies only—returned last Friday.
Eleven teams flicked on the OOO and headed to the State Netball and Hockey Centre, armed with varying levels of fitness, little knowledge of the rules and the sort of competitive spirit usually reserved for a pitch.
Among them was us, ATime&Place…For Contact. Merched to the max and with a name that threatened physical aggression and no respect for personal space, our fearless leader Millsy down back at GK well and truly delivered on our brand promise.
The day began with the usual pleasantries, smiles, hugs and a few ‘oh that’s where you are now’. Then with the first whistle blown, all the presence of being a nice person went out the window as friends became enemies, colleagues became liabilities and the ladies in white – well they became clients to be both feared and shamelessly sucked up to.
The standard of play was genuinely impressive with passes rocketing in from everywhere, spectacular intercepts and shots that landed with actual skill.
In the end, Grand Final glory went to Hoopwatson from Howatson+Co who took home the converted championship title after defeating Hardie Har Har from Hardie Grant—worthy runners up.
Howatson—if they have room left in the pool room of their swanky new offices—can enjoy ultimate bragging rights until next year.
Best Dressed honours went to Think HQ’s Sharp Shooters who all arrived as Pitball. That’s some commitment.
Also bringing the on-court chaos was RuBRX Cube, Bastion Broncos, Cummins & Passers, Clemenger BBDO, Win Pass Play, TBW-ESHAAAYYYY and the Ponies.
The debrief and rehydration was held at Naughtons with over 100 sweaty warriors limping their way to the back bar.
As for the official post match report, we’re pleased to say that to our knowledge no ambulances were called and no arrests made. And truly, with the number of competitive advertising people in one place – that is a great result in itself.
So once again the MADC Global International Worldwide Netball Competition – For Melbourne Agencies Only delivered everything we could hope for – fierce competition, excellent sportspersonship and a reminder that being good at your job doesn’t necessarily translate into being good at netball…unless of course you’re Hoopwatson. Damit.
Thanks to Amy Lee, the MADC committee and our RMIT student volunteers, Ava Stone, Alannah Kein and Ireland Todd-Chandler who gave up their time to help make the afternoon run smoothly.
Burn those gross bibs and bring on the next one!
