Harvey Norman, Apple & Ray White Top Most Complained About List

Home retailer Harvey Norman and tech giant Apple are our most complained about businesses, if the latest data from NSW Fair Trading is to be believed.

The two companies headed NSW Fair Trading’s brand new register that monitors the number of consumer complaints a business receives. Over the past year the register had received some 4500 complaints. You can read the full list here.

Harvey Norman received 376 complaints in the past year, followed by Apple with 265, realtor Ray White with 225, The Good Guys managed 213 and Samsung Electronics also had 213.

NSW Fair Trading commissioner Andrew Gavrielatos said while some traders continued to appear each month, many only appeared just the once.

“This is a clear sign that the register is having the desired effect of encouraging businesses to improve the service and product they provide to NSW consumers,” Gavrielatos said.

“The register also provides an avenue for consumers to help each other; if enough report a trader’s poor service, they can help warn fellow consumers via the register,” he added.

However, not everybody is a fan of the register, with many larger retailers and franchises claiming it unfairly targets their businesses. The larger the business, the more customers, the more likely there are to be complaints.

It had been called “negligent and reckless” as it targeted brands “who, due to the popularity of their brand and their sheer size, will almost always have 10 consumer complaints per month.”
