The Smith Family tugs heartstrings in David and the Big Heavy

The Smith Family and The Solid State have launched the second film in the animated short series ‘Tales of the ONE IN TEN’.

The short film titled ‘David and the Big Heavy’ follows on from ‘Alice and the Giant Emptiness’ launched in February across social media, and also uses a real life case study.

“It’s estimated that 1 in 10 Australian children live in jobless families. It’s a staggering statistic and most people are unaware of just how large this group is,” said Dr Lisa O’Brien, the Smith Family’s chief executive officer.

The campaign aims to raise awareness about the severe impact disadvantage on children and the effect it has on their education, Dr O’Brien said.

The short film tells the story of 13-year-old David who moves to Australia with his family to live with his grandparents. Their grandfather is taken gravely ill, forcing the family to move out and make their own way.

David’s mother cannot speak English and struggles to find stable employment. Problems compound for David, and he begins struggling at school and finding it hard to make friends.

This increasing burden is represented by an over-sized backpack that eventually becomes too heavy for him to carry.
