Burger King Ad Gets Resurrected As Symbol Of Belgian Defiance

Following Tuesday’s horrific terrorist attacks in Belgium, locals have resurrected an old Burger King ad as a symbol of defiance and solidarity.

The ad – actually from 2008 – shows some fries assembled to send a rather provocative message. French Fries are famous in Belgium and considered its national dish and is likely why the image has resurfaced and being shared widely on social media.

Not that the original chip ad has anything to do with global terror. It actually started life in New Zealand eight years ago and was designed by creative firm Young and Rubicam, Mashable is reporting.

The original campaign was in response to a new tollway being built across the road from a local Burger King outlet and follows motorists’ fury at being slugged a new toll for a road they used to drive on for free. The ad promised a $2 discount on a Burger King meal – the same price as the toll.

In response to the repurposing of the ad in response to the terror attacks, the Kiwi agency told Mashable: “We are proud to be part of any efforts to end violence and bring about peace.”
