Bluey’s ‘Duck Cake’ episode will come to life in a pop-up cafe in Bondi this weekend, via BBC Studios ANZ.
Spannig two days, Saturday 11 and Sunday 12 October, the free experience takes places at Bondi Westfield, inviting families to immerse themselves in Bluey’s world and celebrate the Bluey Duck Cake episode from Season 2.
The activation, bought to life by Organic Publicity and The Event Department, reimagines The Australian Women’s Weekly’s duck cake, first published in the 1979 Children’s Birthday Cake Book, which hit-TV show Bluey revived for a new generation.
Inside the themed cafe, guests will step into the Heeler’s kitchen and backyard. Attendees can decorate their own ‘Duckling’ cupcakes (a mini version of the iconic cake), meet Bluey in person.
“At the heart of everything Bluey is authenticity and rich storytelling”, Madeleine Santos, head of brands & marketing, brands & licensing, BBC Studios ANZ said.
“The Duck Cake Cafe not only celebrates Australian culture but delivers a tangible, joyful Bluey experience that lives beyond the screen. Our ambition is to continue to deliver creative, innovative ways for Bluey fans to connect with our beloved stories, whilst staying true to Bluey’s humour, relatability and quintessential Aussie-ness,” Santos added.
The cafe will feature appearances by David McCormack, voice of “Bandit”, and Agnes Lee, the original creator of the duck cake, who developed it during her time in The Australian Women’s Weekly test kitchen.
“When I first created this cake for The Australian Women’s Weekly Children’s Birthday Cake Book, I never imagined it would one day be featured in Bluey and rediscovered by a whole new generation of families around the world. It’s incredibly special to see how the show has brought new life to the cake, and to see the Bluey Duck Cake Cafe celebrate it in such a fun and creative way,” Agnes Lee said.
The event is free to attend, with tickets available via public ballot from Friday, 10 October.
