It’s that time again. The time we gather around to judge our fellow man and question, who on earth was actually searching that? Google Search has lived long enough to celebrate the year that was, and it is just as brilliant as every year that came before.

2025 proved Australians are equal parts news-hungry, nostalgia-soaked, food-obsessed and delightfully confused. We Googled elections and cyclones, Grammys dresses and KPop Demon Hunters, DIY projects and viral desserts. We grieved legends, cheered champions, and collectively whispered into the abyss: What the hell does 6 7 mean?

We watched the world spin, and then we Googled it.

Cyclone Alfred was the year’s biggest search, dominating news interest as Aussies tracked warnings, live coverage and urgently wanted to know how to prepare for a cyclone that never fully came to fruition.

Aussies followed the federal election closely and the fallout of Labor’s win, typing Peter Dutton and Sussan Ley into our search bars as often as we typed how to vote.

Beyond home soil, we zoomed out. When Pope Francis tragically passed away, Aussies became enamoured by the process of appointing a new Pope and were quick to become overnight experts in Pope Leo XIV.

Iran, Greta Thunberg and Charlie Kirk all piqued the nation’s curiosity.

Sport + screens = our national comfort zone

2025 was a big viewing year. We cheered our way through the Women’s Cricket World Cup and watched Madison Keys become the global breakout name of the Australian Open.

Off the field, we dove deep into pop culture. Belle Gibson re-entered headlines thanks to the Netflix series Apple Cider Vinegar, Bianca Censori’s Grammys entrance became a talking point.

Jimmy Kimmel and Kendrick Lamar topped searches, and Minecraft: The Movie fed our nostalgia and gaming brains at the same time.

We also googled plotlines, with Is Adolescence based on a true story? being one of our most-asked questions.

We cooked, we craved, we snacked our way through 2025

The top recipe of 2025 was the classic hot cross bun. But then things got interesting. Dubai chocolate and its pistachio-tahini centre became the dessert we couldn’t stop thinking about.

Cloud cakes trended, bacon desserts raised eyebrows, and Ninja slushies made blenders nationwide tremble with fear of being replaced.

But it was so much more than just treats, viral wellness and weight loss trends crept in too, with pink salt trick recipe and Japanese mounjaro searches showing Aussies were experimenting with healthier hacks.

And then came the chaos, the beautifully weird stuff

Every Year in Search gives us that one category where the nation collectively asks: what on earth were we doing?

In 2025, we Googled Labubu figures like treasure hunters as these demonic looking dolls took control of the world.

We looked up Discog, Claves, Droven and Habeas Corpus in a context that makes no sense to us, because we couldn’t tell you what one of these things is.

We asked Who shot Charlie Kirk and Where is Belle Gibson now.

And the year’s most confusing and utterly ridiculous mystery, what does 6 7 mean, united the internet in confusion, fascination and mild existential crisis. The answer – no one knows, so let’s just all stop using it.

So this is Australia in 2025: sporty, snack-driven, news-aware, and overtly curious. Let’s go again next year, if Google search still lives to tell the tale.
