Australia needed a breather from its total domination in the Commonwealth Games, and Seven (the host broadcaster of the event) served up a treat on its main channel.
More than 2 million viewers tuned in to watch the Geelong Cats demolish the Collingwood Magpies by 25 points, largely due to a five goal first quarter blitz.
The game had an average audience of 615,000, perhaps due to Magpies fans turning over to Seven’s Commonwealth Games night coverage, which posted a higher average audience of 673,000 and reached 1.56 million.
The Comm Games, which has seen Australia collect a ridiculous 51 gold medal haul, has provided some incredible moments on the track in the past day and a bit.
Lachie Kennedy became the fastest Australian (and caucasian sprinter) in history with a 9.85 second silver medal effort in the blue riband men’s 100m sprint.
This was followed up by Rose Davies winning gold in the 5km ahead of Jess Hull, three Aussies (Peter Bol, Luke Boyes and Peyton Craig) making the final of the 800m, and Australia winning the team sprint gold in the velodrome.
Other programs that attracted eyeballs were The Chase (reaching 1.4 million) Tipping Point (reaching 1.37 million) and
Nine’s coverage of the Roosters 82-12 walloping of the Titans.
