Optus has announced it will bring world-class VR tech to this weekend’s Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix, with the OPTU5G VR Track Tour, giving fans a unique opportunity to test their skills while experiencing a birds-eye view of Albert Park.
Wearing a sophisticated HTC VR headset, racegoers will take pole position as they experience an immersive 360° tour of the Albert Park Grand Prix Circuit with Optus ambassador, V8 Supercar driver, Chaz Mostert.
The high definition 5G-enabled encounter will transport fans above the track, where you’ll feel the thrill of the circuit’s chicanes, moving at lightning speed through every twist and turn.
Pushing their senses into overdrive, they’ll feel an added rush of adrenalin as they accelerate down the straight at blistering speeds, with Mostert on hand offering words of encouragement along the way.
It’s even more exciting that the Formula 1 Heineken Australian Grand Prix 2022 will finally make its triumphant return to Albert Park on Thursday, 7 April, after two years of pandemic restrictions.
“We’re excited to partner with Optus to bring fans a new way to experience the redesigned Albert Park Grand Prix Circuit,” said Australian Grand Prix corporation general manager, Michelle Greco.
“Showcasing all of the exciting changes, the OPTU5G VR Track Tour provides an immersive perspective of the circuit like never before, which is all made possible thanks to state-of-the-art technology – this VR experience is a must do.”
Optus managing director of marketing and revenue, Matt Williams, commented, “As a Formula 1 Heineken Australian Grand Prix 2022 partner, we are excited to offer event visitors the opportunity to see the track from a different perspective.
“The OPTU5G VR Track Tour brings the metaverse to life, merging reality with virtual reality to create an exhilarating user experience. And what better way for people to see the track here in Melbourne than with Chaz, a motorsport legend.
“Optus 5G provides the low latency, high-capacity and speed required to bring this multi-user ‘tour’ to life in high-definition graphical detail without the need for a safety car. What we’re showcasing here in Melbourne is the future of entertainment, fuelled by 5G and I can’t wait for people to experience it first-hand.”
Mostert added,“If you’re down at Albert Park this weekend then head over to visit the OPTU5G VR Track Tour. I can honestly say that once you put that VR headset on and get up in the sky with me you’re not going to be missing traction control.
“I’ve driven this track many times but experiencing it from up high has given me a whole new perspective.”
The OPTU5G VR Track Tour will be located in Champions Gateway and is a free experience available to all ticketholders across the four-day event.
