Menulog will close its struggling Australia and New Zealand business in a fortnight, bringing to an end a 20 year stint (and iconic TV ads starring Snoop Dogg, Katy Perry and Christina Aguilera) in this market.
Parent company Just Eat Takeaway.com has decided to pull the plug after a series of poor performances, instead focusing on growing its food delivery brands in Europe, the UK and Ireland.
In the first half of 2025, Menulog’s ‘Rest of the World’ revenue, which includes Australia, dropped by 17 per cent ($500 million) to $2.66 billion. In FY24, the segment (Australia, Canada and Israel) was down 15 per cent. The closure of Menulog follows a sale of its US business, Grubhub this year.
It will impact 120 staff, who have been promised “generous redundancy packages above legal requirements and outplacement support”.
“Today is a tough day for the Menulog business and I would like to reassure everyone this decision was not taken lightly,” Menulog managing director Morten Belling said.
“Our priority now is to support our customers, couriers and partners. This is why we are providing everyone a two-week transition period, in which customers can redeem unused vouchers and credits. Additionally, eligible couriers will be entitled to a 4-week voluntary payment.”
Menulog’s shutdown also impacts its advertising suppliers, including the creative agency Thinkerbell and media agency UM.
Over the years, Menulog has produced iconic work, coining the famous ‘Can Somebody Say Menulog’ jingle. Recently it released ‘What’s Good In Your Hood’ by Thinkerbell, which starred the Aussie hip hop group Bliss n Eso. Other notable work includes Dolla Dolla Deals.
Globally, McCann Worldwide has created catchy and iconic spots for the Menulog’s parent company, starring Snoop Dogg and Christina Aguilera (see below).
Thinkerbell has been approached for comment, while UM declined.
