Apple is reportedly working on a new touchscreen Macs, with a MacBook Pro with OLED expected to be the first touchscreen model off the production line.
Apple engineers are reported to be “actively engaged” in the project, according to people familiar with the efforts. However, a launch has not been finalised and the plans could change.
Based on current internal deliberations, the company could release the first model in 2025 as part of a larger update to the Mac lineup.
A representative for Apple declined to comment on the rumour when asked by Bloomberg.
The move would mark a major change in Apple’s design philosophy as Steve Jobs previously said that touchscreen computers were “ergonomically terrible” and that touchscreens should only be reserved for smaller products such as the iPhone and iPad.
The current plans would see first touchscreen MacBook Pro retain a traditional laptop design, including a standard trackpad and keyboard. Over time, Apple could expand touch support to more of its Mac models.
Whether a touchscreen would convince any new buyers to switch to Mac — or any existing users move away as Jobs predicted — remains to be seen.
