Retail giant Amazon officially reported $1.12 billion in net sales for Australia.
The site saw sales double in 2020 as a result of COVID-19 inducing online shopping. $511 million of that revenue was directly related to sales from Amazon’s online store.
Revenue from third-party sellers on Amazon’s marketplace rose to $126 million. Amazon Prime subscriptions also increased, leading to a revenue of $90 million.
Though the company reported a net loss of $3.8 million, this was an improvement from 2019, where loss was $4.7 million.
Amazon has expanded significantly in Australia, with new distribution centres in Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne.
In 2018, the ABC reported that workers in the Melbourne warehouse said that working in the warehouse was ‘dehumanising’ and described the workplace as ‘built around a culture of fear’.
Amazon responded that they, “strive to be a great employer in Australia and we believe that we are making good progress but still have lots more to do.”
