Amazon To “Destroy” Australia’s Retail Environment

It only opened the doors to its first ever grocery store the other day in the US, and Amazon is set to be a real game-changer in Australia’s retail environment when it comes Down Under in September next year.

According to news.com.au, the company is promising to sell everything at a 30 per cent discount in Australia, with analysts predicting Amazon could take away as much as $4 billion in sales from local retailers, with JB Hi-Fi and Harvey Norman likely to be hit hardest.

An unnamed Amazon employee told Watermark Funds Management chief investment officer Justin Braitling during a briefing that the company is going to “destroy the retail environment in Australia”, news.com.au reported.

Meanwhile, Wesfarmers group managing director Richard Goyder has repeatedly warned that Amazon will “eat all our breakfasts, lunches and dinners”.

Aussies currently spend between $500 and $700 million with Amazon already online and are prepared to wait for their parcels in order to save a bit of dough, so when a physical store that sells almost anything at rock-bottom prices arrives in Australia in 2017, things are going to get very interesting.
