Brisbane-based digital agency, Alpha Digital, has regained its independent status following a mutual agreement with its parent group ASX-listed XPON Technologies.
XPON Technologies acquired Alpha Digital in May 2025, now all intercompany loans are forgiven, with a nominal cash contribution ($776.29 for shares in Alpha Digital) and performance-based earn-in obligations have been mutually waived and extinguished on completion.
The digital agency has been sold back to founder, Matthew Cooper, just 13 months after it got acquired.
All employees will stay with Alpha, and there are no planned redundancies as part of this news.
When commenting on the announcement, CEO Matt Cooper said, “One of the reasons I started Alpha 15 years ago was the amazing challenge of meeting transformative digital needs of clients. No year, month or day is ever the same. That rate of evolution has only increased.
“When we first joined XPON it was exciting to be able to offer increased layers of automation and experience to our clients. An organisation that had recently picked up best AI agency award. We’ve certainly learned a lot on this journey. The more we’ve integrated AI into our workflow as an agency the more I’ve learned about how best to harness its potential. And honestly despite what you may hear in the industry, I believe that for clients it should not be adopted at all costs. Nor should it be tied to business goals, rather than client outcomes.
“Alpha is returning as an indie because the agility that it provides us will offer the best support for the business outcomes for our clients, along with protecting the best interests of our team and the culture we’ve built at Alpha. This month we celebrate our 15th anniversary and I’m more energised about our future than at any previous point.”
Earlier in the year, Alpha Digital bolstered its senior leadership team bringing on Nathan Fraser, now general manager and Tim Harper-Russell as head of growth and partnerships, to help guide the agency’s future. Tasked with developing a strategy for how the agency helps future-proof itself and its clients, Cooper, Harper-Russell and Fraser are all in agreement that prioritising a human-first AI-enhanced approach best meets the needs of our current and future team and clients.
Alpha Digital will celebrate its 15th anniversary later this month.
