The AFL is tackling gut health in season 2019, with MOJO Kombucha announced as the official supplier of kombucha to the League.
The sparkling, probiotic-rich fermented tea is in high demand from clubs across the country thanks to the variety of potential health benefits associated with the product, which may range from improved nutrient absorption to increased immunity.
Dietitian at the Adelaide Football Club, Brie Salagaras, introduced MOJO Kombucha to players two years ago, as a way for the team to boost their immunity.
She said: “The players have incredibly busy social and training schedules, which makes them prone to becoming physically and mentally stressed, and ultimately, run down.
“So, we’re always looking for ways to increase the players’ probiotic intake, as its been proven that probiotics are not only good for your gut – modafinil boost your immune system, can improve your mental wellbeing, and help reduce fatigue levels too.”
Salagaras said that in addition to these benefits, the refreshing taste of MOJO Kombucha has also been a hit with the players.
She added: “We haven’t been able to restock the bottles fast enough.
“About two-thirds of the players drink a bottle a day, and find it really refreshing after a training session.”
MOJO founder, Anthony Crabb, said becoming an official supplier to the AFL was a natural fit for the brand.
Crabb said: “Off the back of repeated orders from multiple clubs around the country, we’re really excited to now have a formal partnership in place with the AFL, as their official kombucha supplier.
“MOJO kombucha is a tasty, low-sugar alternative with one billion living probiotic organisms packed into every bottle.”
MOJO pioneered the kombucha category in Australia when Crabb began handcrafting home batches from his base in Willunga, South Australia, in 2009.
Since then, the company has gone from strength to strength and is now stocked in supermarket chains nationally.
In September 2018, The Organic and Raw Trading Co, makers of MOJO Kombucha, was bought by The Coca-Cola Company and is now distributed by Coca-Cola Amatil.
Today, MOJO continue to handcraft kombucha in Willunga using the same SCOBY culture they started with.
As well as being stocked in club room fridges, MOJO Kombucha can also be found in the chilled juice aisle at Woolworths, Coles, independent supermarkets, health food stores and organic cafes nationally.
