Pernod Ricard has officially launched Absolut Tabasco in Australia, bringing together two global products as consumers embrace hotter flavours across food, drinks and social occasions.
To mark the Australian launch, Pernod Ricard has partnered with Initiative and VMO to create a landmark activation at Sydney’s Overseas Passenger Terminal, translating the flavour profile heat into a large-scale experience.
Currently on display until 5 October, the activation features a 360-degree volcano structure positioned against the iconic Sydney Harbour backdrop, with a giant Absolut Tabasco bottle emerging from its centre.
Inspired by the global campaign creative, the volcano turns the product’s distinctive, gradually building heat into a physical experience at one of Australia’s most recognisable locations. The execution is designed to stop people in their tracks, generate cultural conversation and introduce Australians to an unexpected new partnership between two globally recognised brands.
Crafted by combining Absolut Vodka with a natural essence created from the fermented, aged red pepper mash used to make Tabasco Sauce, Absolut Tabasco delivers the aroma and heat of the pepper sauce with the taste of Absolut Vodka.
“Having already launched internationally, Absolut Tabasco had set the bar high. We wanted to show what Australia could do,” said Andrew Cambridge, CEO of Initiative.
“It wasn’t enough to secure an outstanding placement in front of an iconic landmark. We wanted to create an experience with impact far beyond the location itself.
“By bringing the campaign’s volcano concept to life on Sydney Harbour, we have blurred the line between creative, media and culture to deliver an Australian launch that is impossible to ignore.”
The harbour installation will be supported across the October long weekend by a nearby takeover of The Oriana, where consumers can experience Absolut Tabasco through the hero Spicy Lemonade and Bloody Mary serves. The activation will feature product trial, branded visibility and social-first moments, bringing the flavour and energy of the partnership into a live hospitality setting. The Spicy Lemonade provides a simple and refreshing introduction to the product, while the Bloody Mary gives a familiar brunch classic a distinctive new kick.
The volcano and venue experience mark the beginning of a broader integrated campaign designed to establish Absolut Tabasco as the hottest new drink of the Australian summer.
The launch will be amplified through large-format out-of-home, streaming video, social and creator content, earned media and high-impact activity across hospitality, retail and e-commerce.
Together, the campaign will build awareness at scale, generate conversation, create opportunities for trial and make the product easy to discover wherever consumers choose to drink, shop or socialise.
“Australians are embracing bigger, bolder flavours, and spice is increasingly moving from the food menu into drinks and social occasions,” said Ella Brett, senior brand manager.
“Absolut Tabasco brings together two iconic brands to create something genuinely distinctive: a smooth vodka with a heat that builds with every sip.
“The Sydney Harbour volcano is our unmissable launch moment, but it is also the starting point for a much broader summer campaign. From bars and retail stores to social content and digital shopping, we are creating multiple ways for consumers to discover the partnership, try the product and make the Spicy Lemonade part of their summer.”
Geoff Cochrane, Australia and New Zealand sales director at VMO, added: “The Absolut Volcano was an incredibly exciting campaign for our team to bring to life. We know audiences in out-of-home environments grow as we head into summer, but the real challenge for brands is how to cut through and create something people genuinely notice.”
Together, the Sydney Harbour volcano, hospitality program and wider paid, earned, retail and digital activity create one connected launch designed to build momentum throughout summer.
