Triple J’s like a version – which sees bands perform covers of other band’s songs – had a shake up on Friday morning when beloved children’s entertainers The Wiggles performed.
Performing the cover were three of the original Wiggles. On the keyboards was Purple Wiggle Jeff Fatt, red Wiggle Murray Cook was on guitar, and blue Wiggle Anthony Field – who is still part of the group – was fittingly dressed in an elephant costume.
They were joined by the current group, which along with Field contains Emma Watkins who was on drums, Lachy Gillespie with lead vocals and Simon Pryce performing additional vocals, including the legendary line “fruit salad, yummy yummy”.
The YouTube video currently has over a thousand likes on YouTube and only five dislikes.
Emma Wiggle told Triple J that they covered Tame Impala because “we wanted to choose something Australian.”
“We’ve never really met them properly but we thought that we’d like to pay tribute to this amazing Australian band.”
Anthony Wiggle added that “we know people take [Like A Version] very seriously.”
“So we didn’t want to stuff it up. Also, it’s an amazing song, and it’s deceptively hard. I thought it was going to be like [Norman Greenbaum‘s] ‘Spirit In The Sky’ but you get into it and…the guy’s a genius!”
The group also performed a new song, “We’re All Fruit Salad!” which they described as a “wrap up of what’s happening around the world.”
“There were all sorts of things happening in America,” said Anthony Wiggle.
“Racial tension and riots and all sorts of terrible things going on and John [Edward, the medium] wrote to me and said, ‘Mate, it’s time The Wiggles tried to bring everyone together’, and he suggested rainbows. I said rainbows aren’t our thing but fruit salad is our thing.”
