The Project‘s Hamish MacDonald has bravely shared his own story of journalists threatening to “out” him.
This weekend the media cycle was eclipsed by the Nine-owned Sydney Morning Herald being forced into damage control after it was claimed an SMH journalist pressured the Australian actress Rebel Wilson to come out in her new relationship with a woman.
For people asking confirmation of who says this wasn’t @RebelWilson‘s choice, the @smh (Sydney Morning Herald) admits it in the link attached to my initial tweet. Screenshot also here 👇👇👇 pic.twitter.com/BwokQlmtIc

The story prompted MacDonald to share his own story on The Project.
He said: “For people coming to terms with their sexuality, that may be something they wake up and realise some day, it may be something that’s a very long journey. I don’t think it’s for anyone else to determine the point at which they talk about that.
“I’ve been at the end of this sort of thing with a couple of journalists before, and it’s scary and intimidating and frankly terrifying when a journalist starts saying to you that they know this about you, and want to put it in print.”
MacDonald’s honesty was a reminder that the media needs to do better and be better.
