SMH Announces Judith Whelan As New Editor Following Editorial Restructuring

Judith Whelan has taken over the reigns as editor of the Sydney Morning Herald, stepping up from her previous role as news editor for the paper.

As editor, her role will involve a responsibility for the title’s editorial direction, as well as pinpointing audience trends and taking a keen look over the digital content.

Per an SMH article, the newspaper’s editor in chief Darren Goodsir said Whelan is an “inspirational and driven newsroom leader who understands implicitly the Herald’s core mission to provide quality, independent and original journalism to an increasingly digital audience”.

The news came after Fairfax wrapped up a period of discussions with senior staff at both SMH and The Age regarding editorial restructuring, and which left a number of journos exiting the building, including the departure of The Age editor-in-chief Andrew Holden.

The SMH also parted ways with columnists Wendy Harmer and John Birmingham this week.
