Kids’ cartoon Peppa Pig is getting with the times, introducing its first lesbian couple in the latest episode that’s just aired in the UK.
The episode is called Families and aired on Channel 5 on Tuesday and saw Penny the polar bear introduce her two mums.
Apparently the decision to introduce a same-sex couple follows years of calls for more LGBTQIA+ characters on the show.
Peppa Pig airs in some 180 countries, however, it remains unclear if the new episode will play in more conservative territories.
In the scene, Peppa Pig and her classmates are asked by their teacher, Madame Gazelle, to draw pictures of their families to be put up on the classroom wall.
Each student has their turn to introduce the family members they have drawn and then go on to describe what they do for a living. Come Penny’s turn, she draws her family including two mums in dresses.
Penny declares: “I’m Penny Polar Bear. I live with my mummy and my other mummy. One mummy is a doctor and one mummy cooks spaghetti. I love spaghetti.”
Madame Gazelle, responds: “Lovely, Penny.”
Thankfully, social media lauded the show’s producers for being more inclusive in its story lines.
One fan tweeted: “THIS is how young children should be taught about inclusion.”
Another added: “We don’t need to talk to them about sexuality. Just show all types of families. They’ll understand the rest when it’s appropriate.”
“An autistic character in Thomas the Tank Engine and a kid with two mums in Peppa Pig … it’s been a good day for representation!” penned another.
