The National Film and Sound Archive of Australia (NFSA) has partnered with YouTube to formally archive the work of 10 of Australia’s most influential creators, bringing digital-first storytelling into the nation’s audiovisual record.

The new NFSA Creator Capsule will preserve 300 videos from the inaugural group, alongside oral histories and contextual material exploring the creators, their work and creative processes.

As part of the collecting process, the NFSA will capture platform data including likes, views and comments, providing a record of how the content was received and engaged with by audiences.

The initiative marks a significant expansion of the NFSA’s traditional collecting remit, placing YouTube-born culture alongside television, radio, music, podcasts, games and film.

Among the creators selected are musician Tash Sultana, whose live-looping videos helped launch their career on YouTube before taking them to international stages; musician, beauty creator and gamer Wengie; and children’s entertainment group Bounce Patrol.

The inaugural cohort also includes mathematics teacher and science communicator Eddie Woo, independent animation studio GLITCH, pioneering comedy creator Natalie Tran’s communitychannel, and Yolŋu bushcraft and culture creators Outback Boys.

Rounding out the collection are scripted comedy duo Superwog, automotive creators Mighty Car Mods and adventure filmmaker Beau Miles.

NFSA chief curator Meagan Loader said audiovisual storytelling had become a dominant way for Australians to express and negotiate identity.

“In 50 years, when Australians come to the NFSA to find the audiovisual stories that defined our time, they’ll expect to see YouTube,” Loader said.

“It’s vital we acquire this now to sit alongside our TV, radio, music, podcasts, games and films.”

Loader said the partnership would also give the NFSA greater insight into how content performs on digital platforms and could help broaden its future collecting efforts.

“This new collaboration with YouTube enriches our collecting by providing insights into platform activity and impact and helps open the door for us to other creators,” she said.

Google Australia and New Zealand vice-president and managing director Mel Silva said the collection is set to highlight the creators’ role in Australia’s cultural record.

“The NFSA is renowned as the official custodian of Australia’s audiovisual culture. While YouTube empowers everyday Australians to share their stories with a global audience, the NFSA is ensuring these 10 creators become a permanent part of our national heritage,” Silva said.

“This partnership is a perfect snapshot of everything YouTube represents—cementing these creators’ place in our living cultural record and giving future generations the chance to discover and experience the rich diversity of contemporary digital storytelling.”
